Bhai Tower: |
Rajabai Clock
Tower is amongst the most cherished and outstanding
landmarks of Mumbai. Also known as The Mumbai Clock
Tower or Rajabhai Clock Tower, this imposing figure
stands at a height of 85 feet. Housed in the premises
of the University of Mumbai, the clock tower is
home to the Mumbai University Library.
Designed by Sir George Gilbert, an English architect,
Rajabai Clock Tower has been modeled on Big Ben,
the clock tower in the Houses of Parliament in Westminster,
UK. Rajabai Tower emerged in its present form in
the year 1878 and its name owed to Premchand Roychand,
a prosperous broker and founder of Bombay Stock
Exchange.
Rajabai Clock Tower has a magnificent architecture
that breathes a combination of Venetian and Gothic
styles. Built out of buff colored Kurla stone, the
clock tower boasts of its stained glasses that are
among the best in Mumbai.
The Tower Clock chimes every fifteen minutes during
the day. When it was first opened it chimed 16 different
tunes including 'Rule Britannia' and 'God Save the
King', now it plays only the chimes of Big Ben throughout. |
